What Would Impress Me About a Candidate?
After multiple rejections and sometimes hearing nothing at all, I decided I needed to do something to make myself more attractive to potential employers.
I began to think.
If I was an employer, what would impress me about a candidate?
I thought a lot about it and then I remembered that a couple of years earlier I had written an article and it was published.
It was about the economist John Maynard Keynes and was published by a magazine in his birth town of Cambridge, England.
How Anyone Can Do This
Now bear with me and I will explain how I have made this strategy one that anyone can easily adopt and without being an expert writer or expert in the subject matter.
The Edge
I included this achievement in my CV and I went from getting no responses, to landing two job interviews in 1 week.
One was a private firm and one was in local government.
I decided to take the job in local government.
Now in both interviews they were most interested in the article I had written and the fact it had actually been published in a magazine.
It convinced me that being published had given me the edge over other candidates
The job I secured in local government had me dealing with the implementation of local byelaws.
I had seen the value of writing my first article and wrote another article about my work and how I created the process I adopted to get these byelaws in place.
That article was also published in a magazine read by local government employees.
My Next Job
When I decided to look for my next job I had two published articles to my credit.
Both featured in my CV and the next business I applied to was a private business situated right in the heart of Manchester, England.
Positioning
In the interview the discussion came up about the articles that were published. I was able to position myself as someone who loved to investigate topics of interest in my work and successfully write about them.
The interviewer was obviously impressed because I secured that job.
It was a dream job for me.
I was working in a prime central Manchester location and in an office block that had just been updated and renovated, called Sunlight House.
I felt I had truly arrived at a place I wanted to be in my professional career.
A Pay Rise
I wrote another article about another aspect of the work I was doing and also got that published in a local magazine.
Shortly after, I mentioned to my employers the fact I had been published again in a local magazine.
I was soon called for a meeting and told how thrilled my employers were with the work I was doing for them.
I was getting a pay rise.
I was excited to say the least.
